Inverurie Cricket Club

Early cricket in Inverurie, pre 1931

The 19th century

There appears to have been a previous Inverurie Cricket Club, as the Northern Cricket Annual of 1889-90 speaks of Inverurie being a "long established club". In 1887 the Aberdeen Cricket Association was enlarged to admit clubs from the county, and Inverurie, as one of the clubs to be admitted as a Senior club, took part in the Challenge Trophy, reaching the semi-final where they were beaten by Caledonian.

The captain at that time was John Alsop, a legendary performer of the period. One of his best performances occurred in a game against Kintore in 1888. After Inverurie where dismissed for 29, Kintore stood at 28 for 6, before Alsop took a hand in the proceedings. He took the last four wickets for 0 runs, including a hat-trick, to snatch a sensational victory for Inverurie.

2nd Inverurie entered the Association as a Junior Club in 1890, and immediately changed their name to Hawthorn. This seemed to bring them some luck as they became the town's first trophy winners when they won the Bon Accord Cup in 1893, defeating Braemar by 94 runs to 88 in the final. Records suggest that they must have decided to quit whilst at the top, as the name of Hawthorn does not appear again!

The turn of the century

Records and memories of the first twenty five years of the 20th century are scarce, sketchy and blurred by time, and it is difficult to trace the rise and fall of the teams that appeared in Inverurie during these years.

A team from Inverurie Paper Mills entered the Bon Accord Cup in 1901 and 1902, but were not to reappear after these seasons.

Inverurie Loco Works, known as the Mechanics, entered the Cup in 1902, and they were joined the following year by Inverurie Butchers. These two clubs were to become the town's main clubs at this time, with the Butchers winning the Bon Accord Cup in 1906, defeating 2nd University in the final.

The start of the Grades

The original Inverurie side, which had disappeared for a period, re-emerged when the Aberdeenshire Grades were formed in 1912. They and the Mechanics played in the Grades, while the Butchers were still active, playing friendly matches. So much cricket was being played at the time, that the Mechanics and Inverurie were able to field 2nd Elevens in the Grades.

A fair bit of success came to the burgh, 2nd Inverurie won Grade 3 in 1920, and the cup in 1923, while 2nd Locos won Grade 3 in 1921, and the cup in 1924. A number of players won individual awards at this time. N McIntosh won Grade 3 batting in 1925 with an average of 26, N F Donald won Grade 2 batting in 1926 with an average of 18.6, and Joe Smith won the corresponding bowling award in 1926 with an average of 3.2.

the Inverurie club once again disappeared around 1924, only to reappear in 1929, when they were reformed by Inverurie FPs. They played at the Pleasure Park, while the Mechanics occupied Harlaw Park, and the Butchers, the Market Green.

Up to 1931, the town had a good number of players, but they were spread over three clubs. Common sense prevailed, and a special meeting held in the Railway Hall, where it was agreed to amalgamate, forming the present Inverurie Cricket Club. The Butcher's pavilion was then moved from the Market Green to the Pleasure Park.

The new club were ready to take their place in Grade 1 cricket.
